Spanish football supremo Luis Rubiales has refused to resign in a stunning on-stage u-turn after his World Cup kissgate controversy. The president of the Spanish FA has been in hot water since planting a kiss on the lips of Spain forward Jenni Hermoso during the celebrations following their FIFA Women's World Cup final win over England five days ago.
Rubiales, who had a spell in Scotland with Hamilton Accies, has faced a furious backlash since kissing Hermoso without her consent and a press conference was called for today, in which Rubiales was expected to announce he was stepping down as the Spanish FA briefed that a replacement had been lined up.But in an astonishing 180, Rubiales issued a defiant speech in which he claimed he was being socially 'assassinated' and vowed to continue in Spanish football's top job.
The words were applauded by both Spain national team managers Luis de la Fuente and Jorge Vilda. After taking the stage, Rubiales roared: "I will not resign, I will not resign.
A social assassination is taking place here. I'm ready to be vilified to defend my ideals."FIFA confirmed it was opening disciplinary procedure against Rubiales.
