A representative for the network did not provide more context for the decision, but Aldean has received immense backlash from the public, with some suggesting it is a "pro-lynching song" — a narrative Aldean adamantly denies. In the video, Aldean's lyrics are sung while news coverage from the 2020 riots illustrates his message.

Prominent gun-control activist Shannon Watts is trying to get country music star Jason Aldean canceled over a song she claims is "racist and violent."  Aldean denies that his song, "Try That In A Small Town," has racial undertones following its music video release last week, in which he touts how small towns wouldn't put up with the kind of lawlessness found in big cities. Country Music Television (CMT) yanked the video without comment on Monday, prompting Aldean to lash out on Twitter, writing, "There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it – and there isn’t a single video clip that isn’t real news footage – and while I can try and respect others to have their own interpretation of a song with music – this one goes too far." Watts first called attention to the song’s lyrics in a late-night tweet Sunday, saying it’s about "how he and his friends will shoot you if you try to take their guns."  Watts later took credit for CMT’s decision in scrubbing the video.

CMT pulled the controversial music video for his song “Try That in a Small Town” from its rotation amid accusations it is pro-lynching and racist.“In the past 24 hours I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests,” Aldean, 46, wrote in a statement posted to his Instagram Story.“These references are not only meritless, but dangerous.”In the first verse, Aldean sings: “Sucker punch somebody on a sidewalk / Carjack an old lady at a red light / Pull a gun on the owner of a liquor store / Ya think it’s cool, well, act a fool if ya like.”He continues: “Cuss out a cop, spit in his face / Stomp on the flag and light it up / Yeah, ya think you’re tough.”Then comes the chorus.“Well, try that in a small town / See how far ya make it down the road / Around here, we take care of our own / You cross that line, it won’t take long / For you to find out, I recommend you don’t,” Aldean warns.In the second verse, Aldean claims he’s equipped with a gun from his grandfather. “Got a gun that my grandad gave me / They say one day they’re gonna round up / Well, that s–t may fly in the city, good luck,” he advises, though it’s unclear who “they” refers to.

Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic CMT has confirmed that, after initially airing Jason Aldean’s highly controversial music video for “Try That in a Small Town,” the network pulled the contentious clip from the air on Monday, even before the furor over the tune grew greater on Tuesday. A CMT spokesperson had no further comment on the video being yanked. Reps for Aldean’s label, BBR Music Group, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Billboard was first to report the video being removed by the network. Meanwhile, Aldean took to his social media Tuesday afternoon to defend the song from its many critics, taking a much softer tone in his messaging than he does in the hostile single itself, or a video that projects images of demonstrators onto a courthouse that was the site of a famous lynching.
