DWP to close over 40 UK offices with 'thousands' of jobs at risk
The Department of Work and Pensions has today announced a plan to close around 42 offices, and unions claim that "thousands" of jobs could be at risk.Thousands of benefits office staff were called to meetings at 10.30am today to be told about the changes.Thirteen of the 42 offices will be closed with "no other strategic site nearby" leaving some 1,300 workers either losing their jobs altogether or reapplying for work in another government department.Roughly another 29 offices are expected to shut with their 12,000 workers having to move to another site nearby. Many of the closures are in key parts of northern England, from Blackburn and Bradford to Washington and Stockton-on-Tees.Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey had recently described the DWP staff as 'exceptional', saying: “They are the hidden heroes for many people in this country. They should take great pride in their hard work and dedication to supporting people through these difficult times.”Shadow DWP minister Justin Madders said: "It looks as though the DWP doesn't believe in levelling up, it doesn't believe in its own rhetoric on jobs, and it doesn't believe in keeping people in work."Many of the closures are in areas of economic deprivation that can hardly afford to lose good quality, public sector jobs.

Premier League and PSG ace Bruno Rodriguez has had his leg amputated due to the effects of his football career. The former Bradford City forward, 49, made just two top-flight appearances for The Bantams on a season-long loan from the Parisian giants in 1999.Retiring from football in 2005, the Frenchman has been in constant pain since hanging up his boots and has finally ended the suffering by opting to remove the lower half of his leg.The news was confirmed by The Union Nationale des Footballeurs Professionnels (UNFP) in a statement on Saturday (March 12).It read: "He was one of the strikers who marked our football from the early 90s to the heart of the 2000s."@UNFP sends strength and courage to Bruno Rodriguez, who had to, after the effects of his football career, resolve to the amputation of a leg by dint of permanent suffering."Spending most of his playing days in his homeland, the Bastia-born striker had spells at Monaco, Strasbourg and Metz before signing for PSG in 1999.Clearly not favoured by manager Philippe Bergeroo, Rodriguez was shipped out on loan to Bradford in September for a loan fee of £500,000.HAVE YOUR SAY! The Chase's Bradley Walsh makes cheeky 'animal' jibe at nervous contestant
Bradley Walsh was in a rather cheeky mood after he made a joke about a contestant's poor performance during the latest episode of The Chase. Blonde beauty Libbie, who was from Bradford, had hopes of winning a large sum of cash on the ITV show. However, Libbie's nerves seemed to get the better of her in the cash builder round and she only managed to answer three questions correctly.Bradley, 61, was also fairly surprised by the player and joked that even "some animals" could have answered her set of questions. The star quipped: "Some of those questions there, some of your animals could have got."However, Bradley also highlighted the fact Libbie appeared nervous while on the show to which she agreed. But when the contestant asked Bradley if she was able to have another go, he simply replied: "Ummm no."Although she managed to gain £3,000 in the cash builder round, Libbie – who had hoped to use her winnings for her upcoming wedding – decided to go for the lower offer. When chaser Shaun Wallace tempted her with the option of going for the higher offer of £27,000, Libbie thought it would be best to go for the safer proposal on the table which was £1,000.Libbie's team members also tried to advise her to stick to the amount that she had already earned, however the player was firm with her decision.Seeing her take the lower proposition early on in the competition, viewers at home were clearly annoyed and quickly rushed to Twitter to vent. One viewer penned: "Imagine traveling to the The Chase studios and taking £1k, the low offer, what’s the f***ing point?"Another said: "First contestant already ruined it.
