Lanzarote and Gran Canaria are in danger of new lockdowns as the holiday islands spiralled into coronavirus "hot zones." The popular Canary Islands could be bitten by new lockdown measures in the coming days if measures to control coronavirus outbreaks are ignored or fail.

President of the Canary Islands Ángel Víctor Torres warned of the risk and has called in 100 soldiers to help police tackle the "worrying" situation.

Towns in both Lanzarote and Gran Canaria have seen the number of positive cases outstripping other areas and islands and more restrictions could be enforced.

Mr Torres warned fines and other sanctions could increase if people ignore the new coronavirus rules including social distancing and the mandatory wearing of masks
