King Charles wiped away tears from his eyes as he and Camila, Queen consort, walked into Buckingham Palace this afternoon following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

They both arrived back in London from Scotland where they were met by thousands of people who had gathered to pay their respects to the Queen.

The crowds cheered and shouted 'God save the King' while Charles shook hands with those who were there.Her Majesty sadly passed away at Balmoral yesterday, Thursday September 8, surrounded by her family at her bedside.TV footage showed the King and Queen consort walking into the palace grounds, and Charles was later spotted wiping away tears as his emotions ran high.Later, he will address the nation in a speech which will pay tribute to the Queen.

The first full day of 17 in a national period of mourning has started and already church bells across the UK have been ringing out in honour of Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving Sovereign.Following his address, Charles will officially be proclaimed the King by the Accession Council which convenes tomorrow (September 10) at St James' Palace.The proclamation is usually made up of prayers and pledges to the new monarch as well as honouring the previous ruler.Following this, the proclamation will then be signed by several senior figures including Prime Minister Lizz Truss and the Archbishop of Canterbury Reverend Justin Welby, among others.
