King Charles told a D-Day veteran on Thursday 6 June that he was “doing well” as he chatted with war heroes at a commemoration event. The King and Queen Camilla were visiting Ver-sur-Mer in Normandy as part of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, and the royal couple attended a ceremony before visiting a marquee where veterans were being served tea and cakes.

King Charles sat at one table beside Clacton-on-Sea resident Ronald Hendrey, 98, who asked the King about his health. Mr Hendrey said: "He was very nice, he listened to what I was saying and took it in.

I asked him how he was doing, he told me he is doing well." The King was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and has been receiving regular treatments that are still ongoing.

He resumed royal duties at the end of April and today marked the first day he has travelled abroad since his diagnosis. However, it was announced that the King would not be appearing at a second scheduled event on the same day, with the Prince of Wales instead representing his father at an international event with world leaders on Omaha Beach on Thursday afternoon.
