Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes reckons the return of Kyle Magennis is just like getting a new signing before the transfer window opens.The 26-year-old midfielder is easing his way back into things after a year-long injury and made it through 45 minutes for the first time since September 2023 during yesterday’s 2-0 win over St Mirren.Magennis replaced the injured Kyle Vassell just before the interval and produced an assured performance that included winning the second penalty of the afternoon when he was fouled by Alex Gogic in the area.Bruce Anderson stepped up to convert, having earlier tapped home his own rebound from a missed spot-kick in the first half.Killie made it three successive home wins and moved to within three points of the top six.McInnes said: “David Watson has played a lot of football recently and we took the option to try and get Kyle moving again and get him going.“I thought it was a good decision because he showed his quality at times, puts his foot in the ball at times.
It feels like we’ve got a new signing before the window opened up. It’s great to have him back.”As for the injury to his skipper, which was sustained in a challenge with Buddies defender Richard Taylor, the gaffer didn’t want to say too much before the results of an x-ray, commenting: “I don’t really want to speculate too much but it certainly looked as if it could be a sore one.“He’s a tough boy, he takes some amount of treatment.
He doesn’t get fouls half the time because people think he’s so big and strong but I think it was a shove off the ball that jarred his leg.
