Jay Slater: 'It was clear to us both that it would be easy for us to miss him, even if he were lying just feet away from us'

It was confirmed on Monday that a body believed to be missing Jay Slater had been found, close to the spot where his mobile phone last 'pinged'.

The journalist told how he spent more than two weeks there while experienced search and rescue officers, volunteers, and even Jay's own family bravely joined the hunt to find him in the vast and unforgiving terrain of Parque Rural de Teno nature reserve.Alongside the reporter was Stan Kujawa, a photographer with the Mirror.

They both spent day-after-day standing by and walking along various points above and next to the spot, close to a palm tree, where Jay sent his last messages to pals, pinpointing his location.He said: "It was clear to us both that it would be easy for us to miss him, even if he were lying just feet away from us.

The landscape in and around the 2,000ft ravine is unlike anything I have ever witnessed. "The rugged ground below the spot where Jay was last seen rises and falls with little to no warning.
