Instead of being waved in by cuddly mascots promising family fun, visitors to Action Park were greeted with gory pictures of bloody injuries sustained beyond the gates.
Some never got out alive – but ticket sales soared as fans clamoured for thrills with blood spills. Creator Gene Mulvihill believed he was selling danger to people tired of being over-protected and yearning for danger.
He said: “People like not being restricted.” And he meant it. When his family car was full, he made the kids sit on the roof and cling to the luggage rack.
