Iceberg three times the size of London splits in two on collision course with island

Named A-68a, it broke off from Antarctica's Larsen C ice shelf in 2017 and has been drifting in the ocean ever since.As recently as April 2020 it measured a mammoth 2,000 square miles.Ever since, it has been on course to hit South Georgia in the southern Atlantic Ocean and the impact was thought to be imminent.It is not yet clear exactly why the iceberg fractured, but a crash into the shallow seabed close to the South Georgia shoreline may have caused the split, according to the European Space Agency.

South Georgia is without permanent habitation but it is an important wildlife refuge and is home to millions of penguins, seals and other creatures.
