Bananas are an affordable and versatile staple for many shopping lists, yet their limited shelf life can be disappointing. The loved yellow fruit may hang in the kitchen for a few days, but if neglected, bananas quickly deteriorate into a gooey brown mess.Kate Hall, a food waste specialist, has come up with a clever tip to extend the life of bananas significantly by utilising the freezer.

And her method doesn't just preserve the fruit, this technique actually enhances its taste. On the Channel 5 programme 'Fresh Vs Frozen: Which is Better?', Kate disclosed her unique 'split' strategy for keeping bananas fresh for an extended period, reports the Express. She said: "When we stop and think about how far a banana for example has travelled; the land, the water, the energy, the transportation, the packaging, everything that has gone into that piece of food that we're letting go off and go into the bin, has an enormous impact on our planet."While you can freeze bananas whole, Kate pointed out that they do become black and somewhat unappealing during defrosting.

However, she advises against the usual method of cutting bananas into rounds for freezing. Instead, she advocates for the 'split' approach.Kate said: "You can just slice it on the tray but also, if you pop your finger into the end of the banana, it will separate into three fingers and then they are just amazing dipped in chocolate."Bananas can be frozen for up to six months, although they are best used within the first two to three months.

Despite developing freezer burn if left in sub-zero temperatures for too long, they remain safe to consume.Storing Kate's split chocolate bananas is a straightforward process.
