Met Office forecasts gales and winds of up to 55mph as yellow rain warning in force

The Met Office has warned heavy rain and gales will batter much of the UK today, with winds of up to 55mph expected. The heaviest rainfall is expected in parts of southwest Scotland where a yellow rain warning will be in place from 2pm today until midnight.

The weather front is working its way towards the UK from the west and will bring rain firstly to northern and western parts of the UK, reaching the rest of the UK by the evening. Within the warning area we can expect to see 25 to 35mm of rain, with some of the wettest areas receiving up to 60mm. The rain will be accompanied by strong southerly winds.” Meanwhile, southerly winds will impact many parts of the UK this evening but they are likely to be strongest across parts of Wales.

Coastal areas around the Irish Sea could see up to 55mph winds, while inland areas could see gusts of up to 40mph. The Met Office said: "Turning windier this afternoon with gales possible on some Irish Sea coasts later.
