Senator Cory Booker broke a record with the longest speech ever on the Senate Floor this week by speaking nearly continuously for 25 hours and five minutes.
The record was previously held by Strom Thurmond in 1957. His decision to speak for this long as a form of protest comes just a few weeks after nine Democrats voted to move a Republican spending bill forward.
What he did is generally referred to as a “filibuster,” which usually is a tactic to “prolong debate and delay or prevent a vote on a bill, resolution, amendment, or other debatable question.” This means that Cory did not sit down or eat during the momentous protest.
He explained how he was able to do it without using the bathroom for 25 hours.
