Captain Sir Tom Moore was a national hero like no other. As Britain faced perhaps its toughest crisis since the Second World War, the determination of a grandad who had survived that conflict 75 years earlier brought a struggling nation together.
Unlike most veterans, Captain Tom – as he became affectionately known across the country – will not be best remembered for the heroic deeds that brought him military medals.
He will instead be remembered for a simple act of humble heroism saved until last. An elderly man supported by a walking frame who kept going for the millions of others who watched him taking those slow steps.
