The filmed version of Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s historical stage musical Hamilton will debut in July (2020) on the Disney+ streaming service, rather than in cinemas next year as planned. Disney chiefs had planned to debut the movie, directed by Thomas Kail and featuring a theatrical performance by the original cast, including Miranda, in cinemas in October 2021.
Instead, they will make the musical, which tells the story of U.S. founding father Alexander Hamilton, available on Disney+ on July 3, meaning it will be viewable on America’s 4 July Independence Day holiday.
Miranda announced the change on Tuesday (May 12), saying in a press release: “I’m so proud of how beautifully Tommy Kail has brought ‘Hamilton’ to the screen.
