EXCLUSIVE: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American rights to The Critic, a period thriller starring Ian McKellen (Lord of the Rings franchise), which adapts Anthony Quinn’s novel Curtain Call.
Directed by Anand Tucker (Hilary and Jackie) from a script by Academy Award nominee Patrick Marber (Closer), the film will release in theaters on September 13th, concurrent with Lionsgate & True Brit Entertainment’s wide release in the UK.
Set in London in 1934, the film follows Jimmy Erskine (McKellen), the most feared theatre critic of his age. He lives as flamboyantly as he writes and takes pleasure in savagely taking down any actor who fails to meet his standards.
When the owner of the Daily Chronicle newspaper dies, and his son David Brooke (Mark Strong) takes over, Jimmy quickly finds himself at odds with his new boss and his position under threat.
