Ed Balls had to temporarily step aside from his Good Morning Britain hosting duties mid-show as Susanna Reid conducted an interview with his wife, Yvette Cooper.Susanna spoke to the Home Secretary alone during Monday's (November 4) episode of the ITV breakfast show.
Before the segment, Ed informed viewers: "As you know she's my wife, so i'll sit this one out" before exiting the studio. This follows criticism of ITV after Ed was allowed to interview his spouse on GMB earlier this year.
The programme faced backlash on social media post-broadcast, with some viewers suggesting it presented issues of bias and conflict of interest. In response to allegations from fans that the interview represented a conflict of interest, an ITV spokesman stated that they considered their interviews "fair and duly impartial". "Following a weekend of rioting and national unrest, GMB featured a range of interviews and discussion around this national emergency on today's programme," the broadcaster commented at the time, reports the Mirror. "[These] included James Cleverly, Shadow Home Secretary and Yvette Cooper, Home Secretary.
We are satisfied that these interviews were balanced, fair and duly impartial."Balls and Cooper, who have been married since 1998 and share three children, appeared in an episode aired in August where Ed told co-host Kate Garraway he "had not seen [Cooper] at all in the last week"."When these events happen, and if you're the prime minister or the home secretary, it becomes pretty much 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so it's tough," he observed.
