Scenes of massive queues outside 24-hour Primark stores have provoked anger. Furious onlookers worried the hordes of shoppers piling into the shops in the small hours of the morning would spark a 'second lockdown.' The bargain chain temporarily extended 11 stores' opening hours after England's national lockdown ended.
Huge queues were seen snaking outside stores from Trafford, to Birmingham and Leeds - well past midnight. Shoppers told of waiting in line for up to two hours overnight in Trafford's mall as tills were overwhelmed by demands.
Primark had said it had prolonged opening times after lockdown ended to cater to Christmas shopping demand. The chain said opening for 24 hours would be safer as it would stagger crowds of shoppers.
