Former Liverpool chief Damien Comolli has admitted to surviving two transfer scares during his time as a director of football in England involving Gareth Bale and Jordan Henderson.
The first was when Tottenham coming close to agreeing a deal for Bale to move to Nottingham Forest, while the latter was offloading Henderson to Fulham.
Comolli played a leading role in Henderson’s move to Liverpool from Sunderland in 2012 and claims he was always confident of the midfielder’s potential to make the grade despite his slow start at Anfield.
The Frenchman said of the 29-year-old: “We talk a lot about extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation. “He's somebody who has got where he's got because his intrinsic motivation is off the charts.
