The UK's biggest supermarkets throw away the equivalent of 190 million meals a year, according to a new study. The waste has been condemned as a "scandal" after data released by The Independent suggested that less than 10% of unsold food approaching its use-by or best-before date was passed onto those in need.
Just 24,242 tons was passed on to the needy out of 282,338 tons of unsold food approaching its use-by or best-before date, according to the investigation.
The government-backed charity Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) says that an additional 80,000 tons of the leftover food would have been suitable to donate.
