A market trader has remove a 'golly' doll from her stall after council bosses stepped in. Sarah Hughes, who runs the Smokers Corner at Bolton Market, told the Manchester Evening News it was her 'good luck charm' and that that she's had it since she was a child.

Bolton council has now asked her to removed it. Inspired by a caricature which originated in the United States, the doll is widely considered to be racist.

The figure is best known as the character 'Golly', which was used as a mascot for Robertson's jam until 2001. "It's my good luck charm, I've had it for 30 years," Sarah told the M.E.N. "It has been with me everywhere through everything.

I had it as a child and I've kept it and it has always been with me.
