High streets and shopping centres that would normally be teeming with bargain hunters were empty after the new Covid regulations were brought in at midnight.
Images taken this morning in Manchester and Nottingham show just a few Brits out and about - in stark contrast to the crowds of shoppers in previous years.
Manchester's Arndale centre was near-deserted as lockdown rules forced the closure of non-essential retail, hairdressers and nail salons.
