Cold Weather Payments are to be made to people living in more areas across the UK due to the current freezing weather. Last week the Department of Work and Pensions announced that the threshold for the £25 payments had been triggered in 280 areas benefiting over 580,000 people.
Areas of Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, Cumbria and the North East of England were among those which qualified. Since then further areas have been triggered bringing the total to 309 and on Wednesday, December 6, the DWP has added parts of the East Midlands to the list of areas where temperatures have been low enough to qualify for the money - affecting 11,000 people. READ MORE: Brianna Ghey murder accused allowed to remain out of court as trial hears details of her injuries READ MORE: Recap of updates during day seven of the Brianna Ghey murder trial The £25 payment is paid to those on benefits to help them stay warm, including Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, Support for Mortgage Interest.
They are triggered when the average temperature in an area is recorded as or forecasted to be zero degrees celsius or below for seven consecutive days.
Recipients will be automatically paid £25 for each 7 day period of cold weather running across the winter period between 1 November 2023 and 31 March 2024.
