Ross County have told Don Cowie to show he has the credentials to take the reins full-time after Malky Mackay was shown the door as boss.
The former Scotland midfielder will take charge of the Staggies on an interim basis and will lead the team against Kilmarnock next weekend as the search for a successor gets underway.
Mackay paid the price for a nine-game winless run when he was given the bullet on Wednesday morning and Cowie was informed by chairman Roy MacGregor and CEO Steven Ferguson he's in pole position to land the role in a permanent basis if he impresses in the coming weeks.
County sit second bottom of the Premiership and only maintained their top-flight status with a playoff penalty shoot-out win over Partick Thistle last season and after claiming only two wins from their opening 12 games of the new campaign, the club decided to act.
