The mandatory use of face coverings in certain public spaces will come to an end next week. Boris Johnson has announced that “once regulations lapse the government will no longer mandate the wearing of face masks anywhere”.
The Plan B measures introduced before Christmas to slow the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant will expire on January 26, and will not be renewed, the prime minister confirmed in the House of Commons on Wednesday.
That means that the law will no longer require people to wear face coverings in places like shops and on public transport. However, the changes don't come in until next Thursday, January 27, once the restrictions have expired.
Until then, it is still a legal requirement to wear a face covering, unless you are exempt, in the following places: In schools, face coverings are no longer required in classrooms.
