Gavin Williamson said the government had changed its stance on the wearing of face masks in school settings. For children in Year 7 and above, schools in England will now have the discretion to require pupils to wear face coverings in communal areas and on schools transport.In areas subject to local lockdown measures, such as some Greater Manchester boroughs, it will be mandatory for students to wear face coverings when moving around the school and in communal areas.Mr Williamson said the change followed updated advice from the World Health Organisation (WHO) saying children aged over 12 should wear masks.In Scotland, the Scottish Government announced that from August 31 face coverings should be worn by staff and pupils when moving around.
