Devastating fire at Perthshire town football club pavilion thought to be deliberate
dailyrecord.co.ukPolice have said that a devastating fire in Alyth at the weekend is being treated as having been set deliberately.Emergency services were called to the town’s Diamond Jubilee Park at around 6am on Saturday to tackle a well-developed blaze at the pavilion.The building is the home of local football club Alyth AFC and was in the process of being revamped ahead of the new season kicking-off later this month following a concerted fundraising drive.Speaking on Monday, club president Dave Barclay described the incident as a “big, big, knock” to the close-knit community and stressed a “significant tragedy” was only narrowly avoided.He said: “A lot of the contents of the building were decanted to the outside the pavilion while the work was ongoing, as well as some of the equipment the club has, and unfortunately a fire appears to have taken effect on that and spread to the building.“The work had been ongoing throughout the summer and we were basically getting to the finishing stages of the project.“We were pretty well advanced and we were looking forward to it being up and running ahead of the new season.“It was being kitted-out with a view to it being fit-for-purpose for the decades ahead so it was disappointing, to say the least, when the alarm was raised at 6am on Saturday morning.“Fortunately the family who stay adjacent to the pavilion were woken by the fire service or there potentially could’ve been a significant tragedy.”Mr Barclay continued: “Most fires don’t start on their own so it is a wee bit alarming.“My information is that it appears to have started outside and spread to the changing rooms.“Obviously the project was primarily for the football team, but this something we were doing for the whole area and for other
