David de Gea has turned down Manchester United's first offer of a new contract although both parties are confident of finding a resolution, according to reports.

De Gea is in the final few months of a four-year contract that was signed in 2019, with the Spaniard handed a huge pay-rise up to £375,000 per week.

United reportedly have an option to extend the 32-year-old's stay for a further 12 months but that would involve keeping him on the same wages - something the club do not want to do.

Talks have been ongoing for some time over fresh terms, with both club and player confident they can come to an agreement. And now the Athletic reports that United's opening offer has been turned down by the shot-stopper.
