California Governor Gavin Newsom announced during his daily COVID-19 press conference Thursday, that he had signed an executive order that severely limits debt collectors the ability to garnish stimulus checks.
However, the he said that his order does not apply to those who owe child support or alimony. The Governor also noted that that 21 out of the state’s 24 largest loan servicers will offer a 90-day forbearance on student loan debt, which will impact over 1.1 million Californians. “Californians are reeling from the financial impact of COVID-19, the recently unemployed and those with student loan debt are among the hardest hit,” said Newsom. “The last thing they deserve is to see more money withheld as they try to put food on the table
