Latest coronavirus infection data raises serious questions about England's tier system - with infection rates in some areas three times higher than those facing strictest rules.

Leaders in areas forced into the most restrictive Tier 3 have hit out at the government, while some towns and cities with much higher infection rates have been spared.

Havering, in East London, is in Tier 2 despite having an infection rate of 337.5 per 100,000 - more than three times higher than Lancaster, which is in Tier 3.

Of England's 315 local authority areas, 118 will go into Tier 3 when the national lockdown ends on Wednesday - meaning pubs and restaurants must stay closed and people face the strictest rules on meeting people they don't live with.
