One of my favorite quotes about female friendships is by you, Michelle. “Friendships between women, as many women will tell you, are built of a thousand small kindnesses…swapped back and forth and over again.” Tell me about your friendship with these women.Michelle Obama: The other thing I read about friendship is that it requires a level of bravery because you have to reach out and—Amal Clooney: She just physically reached out to stop me from falling five minutes ago.Melinda French Gates: Thank goodness!Obama: But I think that’s where it began.

We’ve all encountered each other in different ways, but Melinda and I were like, “We should talk. We should meet. We should hear about what we each are doing”—and the same thing with Amal.

These two are amazing powerhouses that are doing important things in the world on behalf of gender equality. It seemed natural for us to come together, and from that a friendship has blossomed.
