Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has admitted he came close to joining bitter rivals Tottenham in the January transfer window.Giroud, 33, only made five Premier League appearances in the first half of last season, meaning he was desperate to leave Stamford Bridge at the turn of the year.However, the Blues’ failure to find a suitable replacement meant he was forced to stay put - and in the end that proved a blessing in disguise.The Frenchman went on to become a crucial member of Frank Lampard’s side at the back end of the campaign, with his return of eight goals in 13 league outings helping them secure a fourth-place finish.He also played an important part in Chelsea’s run to the FA Cup final, where they suffered an agonising 2-1 defeat.
