Whilst most cheeses are known for their relatively long shelf life, improper storage can cause them to go off rather swiftly.

Storing cheese correctly is crucial to extending its freshness and avoiding the development of mould.NRC Business Waste's waste experts have revealed that the secret to keeping cheese fresh lies in the handling of moisture, particularly in high water-content cheeses like havarti, mozzarella, and gouda.

They explained: "Cheese, especially softer varieties like havarti, mozzarella and gouda, contain high water content, which makes them more prone to spoilage." They caution against wrapping these cheeses in plastic or clingfilm as it can trap moisture and promote faster mould growth, reports the Express.

The experts stated: "The plastic creates a breeding ground for bacteria and mould - and not the tasty kind."They recommend using parchment paper for storing block cheeses such as cheddar or parmesan, allowing the cheese to breathe while being shielded from moisture.
