This is the moment a 'violent' criminal from Cheshire who had escaped from a Portuguese prison by scaling a 20ft wall was caught by police in Spain.

Mark Roscaleer, 35, was regarded as the 'brains' behind himself and four fellow inmates busting out of the Vale de Judeus prison, in Alcoentre near Lisbon, last September.

He had been serving nine years for kidnap and robbery after robbing a man at gunpoint and subjecting him to 'cruel' torture.

But, five months ago, he and the others used a ladder to climb over the prison's huge perimeter wall and escape. The mass escape led to the resignation of Rui Abrunhosa, the Director General of the Portuguese Prison and Probation Service, after it emerged it had taken guards 40 minutes to detect what had happened.
