The ex-Governor of HMP Liverpool has recounted the dire conditions in which 'feral' inmates were 'living like animals' at a time when the institution was dubbed 'Britain's worst prison'.
Pia Sinha, who played a pivotal role in the transformation of HMP Liverpool following a damning report by HM Inspectorate of Prisons in 2018, is now the Director of the Prison Reform Trust.
She recently shared her experiences on BBC 4's Desert Island Discs in December 2023. During her appearance, Ms Sinha spoke to host Lauren Laverne about the appalling state of HMP Liverpool upon her arrival, saying: "I'd worked in Liverpool before, so I was deputy governor there four years before that.
And so when I walked in, it shocked me just how much it had deteriorated, even in that short space of time. I knew the staff, they were pleased to see me." She continued, detailing the grim reality inside the prison: "And so I kind of felt that in amongst all of the sort of devastation of it, there was still like a beating heart in Liverpool prison.
