Brexit talks have been extended into next week after a disastrous no-deal was averted - for now. Boris Johnson let yet another deadline slip today after what was billed as a showdown lunchtime call with the EU.

He and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said they were "exhausted" but it was the "responsible" thing to do.

The dramatic announcement will give fresh hope that a UK-EU trade deal can be reached in time for EU rules ending in the UK on December 31.

But it also ramps up the risk of Parliament having to sit over Christmas to approve it. The Prime Minister spoke with Ms von der Leyen for 20 minutes at 11am UK time to decide if trade talks had a future.
