People in New York have been urged to "seek shelter immediately" after a tornado warning was issued for the coronavirus-hit city.

The warning covers The Bronx, Yonkers and New Rochelle until 3pm on Tuesday. The potential number of people exposed to the tornado is more than 1.22million - and area covering 14 hospitals filled with patients as the city battles against the coronavirus pandemic.

More than 13,000 people have died of Covid-19 in New York with Mark Levine, the chairman of New York City Council’s health committee, last week describing the situation as “the equivalent of an ongoing 9/11”.

Hospital morgues, funeral homes and cemeteries are all “backed up” with corpses. Th weather warning says penny-sized hail could also fall.
