Formula One will not return to Russia in the future after the sport severed all ties with the country off the back of the invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian Grand Prix, which was scheduled to take place in late September, was already axed for the 2022 season earlier this week.

And now, a fresh F1 statement on Russia has announced: “Formula 1 can confirm it has terminated its contract with the Russian Grand Prix promoter meaning Russia will not have a race in the future.”The Grand Prix, held in the resort city of Sochi, is now the latest in a long-list of sanctions and bans given to all-things Russian across various sporting events in recent days.It made its debut on the calendar back in 2014 after F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone expressed his desire to add a Russian circuit.

The Grand Prix's seven-year spell in F1 was entirely dominated by Mercedes, who remarkably won all seven races.Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton won a record five, including the first and last ever races.Meanwhile, former team-mate and current Alfa Romeo driver Valtteri Bottas picked up the other two wins in 2017 and 2020.The 2021 race saw dramatic circumstances in which pole-sitter and race-leader Lando Norris heartbreakingly missed out on his first F1 win in heavy rain conditions.Talented youngster Norris ended up veering off the track after refusing to change tyres, while Hamilton snatched a crucial win to mount a come-back in the title race.The race being scrapped comes as little surprise given the backlash against Russian drivers in the sport..
