The Whites went behind inside the first minute thanks to Jay Matete's strike. Wanderers goalkeeper Matt Gilks made a string of saves to keep the deficit at just one, while Wanderers missed opportunities at the other end of the pitch.
Substitute Ira Jackson Jnr came off the bench to score Grimsby's second, before Wanderers eventually got on the scoresheet in stoppage time thanks to Shaun Miller who halved the deficit, but it could not prevent defeat.
