BBC The One Show presenter Alex Jones was forced to wipe away her tears in the closing moments of the show this evening, following an emotional tribute to the NHS.

Christopher Eccleston joined Alex and Gethin Jones on the show, having dedicated a poem to the brave workers of the NHS who have battled coronavirus on the nation's behalf.

The 56-year-old actor stood before a rainbow-panelled wall and launched into a recitation of the poem, accompanied by clips of NHS workers in action.

Branding the workers as "soldiers in blue," he said: "We sent them to war with one simple task, to show us the way to lead and inspire us." Later, he referred to the weekly clap for the NHS, saying: "We clapped on our streets hearts bursting in pride." Paying
