The BBC has been fined £28,000 for contempt of court for broadcasting footage from a High Court case on the news. The penalty related to a BBC South East report in November which showed a six-second clip of a judge during a judicial review.
During a contempt of court hearing last month, the High Court heard how the BBC was granted access to a hearing which was being held virtually due to coronavirus restrictions.
The court heard the hearing, which related to a Surrey County Council planning decision, had been recorded by a BBC employee and a six-second clip was later played during two news reports on BBC South East.
The clip was featured in both the 6.30pm and 10pm news reports on BBC South East. Contempt of court laws state it is illegal
