Family who were left penniless by Universal Credit error told to 'try foodbank instead'

A family of six were left without a penny to survive on after falling victim to a Universal Credit payments flaw that the government vowed to fix months ago.

Parents Matt and Sasha Smith have spent the past month living hand to mouth as a result of a benefits error that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) was ordered to rectify last October.

Vehicle technician, Matt, 43, received his salary a month early in December because of Christmas - a fairly common practice in the UK over the festive period.
