The unique clause Liverpool inserted into Philippe Coutinho 's transfer to Barcelona has finally expired. Having lost a free-scoring Luis Suarez back in 2014 the Reds were reluctant to see another one of their top talents play at the Nou Camp.
Having rejected offers of £72million, £90.3m and £118.6m in the summer of 2017, Liverpool eventually accepted an offer of £142m the following January.
It was a record transfer for Barcelona, eclipsing the sum they paid for Ousmane Dembele just five months prior. Liverpool invested well, bringing in both Alisson and Virgil van Dijk.
However, Liverpool were keen to ensure that no more talent was lost to Barcelona as Jurgen Klopp looked to build a side fit to conquer England and Europe.
