B&M has removed Slush Puppie drinks from their shelves after a toddler fell seriously ill.The Record reported that Arla Agnew, two, was left "20 minutes from death" after consuming the drink at a pal's birthday party on Saturday.Arla, from Stranraer, was rushed to hospital suffering from a hypoglycemic episode - where the level of sugar (glucose) in your blood drops too low.Her family said medics explained that Slush Puppie drinks contain the ingredient Glycerol - which in high quantities can make children go into a hypoglycemic shock.
On August 8 2023, Food Standards Scotland issued guidance for retailers to carry warnings on packaging which state that the drinks are not suitable for children under four, but Arla's family claim the drink - with no warning on the label - was purchased from bargain retailer B&M in July.
When the Record approached B&M, a spokesperson said current stock had been inspected and stated that "packaging adheres to the Food Standards Agency recommended guidance."We found that Slush Puppie drinks, without warnings on their labels, were still available to buy in stores as recently as Tuesday.
But shop staff told our reporters the products had been recalled on Thursday, when the Daily Record returned to check stocks in branches across Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
