Ayrshire Roads Alliance boost environment - by using vegetable oil to fuel vehicles

A group that delivers shared council roads and transportation services to communities across East and South Ayrshire is really motoring - on vegetable oil.

The Ayrshire Roads Alliance (ARA) has announced that almost all of its fleet of vehicles will now be running on hydro treated vegetable oil (HVO) - instead of diesel.

And the move will ensure the organisation is making huge strides towards achieving the goals of East Ayrshire Council’s Climate Change Strategy for Transport.

HVO is a viable alternative to diesel and is sustainable as it is made from vegetable oils that are sourced from food waste products.However, the most significant benefit of HVO is that it can reduce CO2 emissions, compared to diesel, by up to 90 per cent.Councillor Graham Barton, spokesman for Net Zero, Environment and Climate Change, said: "The council’s Climate Change Strategy clearly set out goals that we want to achieve to reduce emissions from our vehicles and consequently the council’s impact on air quality locally and climate change.“This project shows that we are serious about tackling the climate crisis and that we are implementing positive change.”Don't miss the latest Ayrshire headlines –sign up to our free daily newsletter here
