Two families affected by the tornado that hit parts of Tameside have launched crowdfunding appeals as residents count the cost of the freak storm.

Experts have now confirmed it was a tornado that hit the Carbrook and Millbrook areas of Stalybridge at around 11:45pm on Wednesday night (December 27).

Locals reported hearing a 'noise that sounded like a bomb' as '25-30 seconds' of extremely high winds and rain battered the area.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported. Based on the extent of the damage caused, the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO), has given it a provisional rating of T5 on the scale used to rate their intensity.
