Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte has admitted he did not choose to sign Djed Spence.Spurs confirmed the £20million transfer of the 21-year-old from Middlesbrough on a five-year deal on Tuesday.
The right-back became their sixth signing of the summer, following Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison and Clement Lenglet.Spence impressed last season while on loan at Nottingham Forest, helping them to promotion in the Championship play-offs and earning a place in the division’s team of the season.

The club wanted to do it. “I said ‘OK, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us’. The club decided to buy him.”Spence is set to compete for the right wing-back position with Matt Doherty, Emerson Royal and Lucas Moura, who Conte is understood to be shaping from his orthodox position as a right-winger.
