The Greater Manchester mayoral vote and all local elections across the region’s ten councils are to be delayed for a year due to coronavirus.
Government took the decision after calls from both the Electoral Commission and the Local Government Association, with many town hall figures arguing against planning for large numbers of voters and tellers gathering in one place to vote and count the result.
There had also been fears that scarce council resources, at a time when many staff are likely to be off work due to sickness or caring for sick relatives, would be better used elsewhere.
