The letter came after comments made by Andy Burnham during a coronavirus press conference yesterday. The Mayor said it would be ‘impossible’ to lift the lockdown in Wigan while the remainder of Greater Manchester remained under tighter restrictions, despite the borough having the lowest infection rate in the region.
Local MPs had previously urged the government to reconsider its decision to impose new measures on the borough but Mr Burnham warned a spike could happen at any moment.
