The affected larch trees, and a buffer zone around them at Walker Fold Wood, within the Smithills estate north of Bolton, must be felled by law.
The woodland, popular with walkers, is to be closed until the summer of 2022 after several trees became infected by phytophthora ramorum.
There were fears that the disease could spread to nearby ‘irreplaceable’ oaks, hence the massive 10-month project to clear the trees, with the wood used for timber.
